Tea Brewing Tips for Loose Teas
These are only recommendations. You might need a bit of trial and error to get the perfect cup. Use about 1-2 teaspoons of loose tea for every 8 ounces of water. Use fresh, clean, cold water; and heat the water a bit differently for each type of tea:
Black – Bring the water to a rolling boil, but don’t over-boil since it depletes the oxygen and results in a flat-tasting tea. Steep 3-5 minutes.
Oolong – Stop just short of a rolling boil. Steep 3-7 minutes.
Green & White – These delicate teas require less heat. Bring water to a pre-boil, or just when air bubbles start to form. Steep 1-3 minutes for green tea and 1-8 minutes for white, depending on the specific tea you are brewing.
Herbal (Rooibos) – With so many different herbs that can be used for herbal tea blends, there is no way to give any temperature or steeping guidelines with any accuracy. Most herbs can be brewed in boiling water for about 5-10 minutes.
Preheat the teapot (or tea cup for a single serving), with hot water, then discard.
Pour heated water over tea leaves to steep. Tea may be placed in the pot loose, or in an infuser, such as a tea ball.
Depending on your steeping method, remove the infuser or use a strainer for the loose leaves. Finally, enjoy your delicious “cuppa”!
